Shoes, Slides, Steps and Straws

Let's start with an update on school! Reese is doing so well and really enjoys her new school, teachers and play mates. We do too!

I could not wish for a smoother transition from home to school! The first week was hard on everyone as we got into a new routine and adjusted to someone else caring for Reese. I continued to call at least twice a day to check in on her and I even stopped by one morning to drop off medicine for a bug bite we discovered on her ear. Reese wasn't so sure about all the new people and rooms at first, but she is becoming a social butterfly before our very eyes.

We live for the daily update sheets which we receive at the end of each day as they give us some insight to her activities. We learn things like: Reese played peek-a-boo with Jane, Reese made Sue laugh while she followed her up and down the ramp on the play structure, Reese read a book and then put it back on the shelf, Reese expressed her joy during music class by clapping after each song and smiling at the class, Reese was not interested in eating cheez nips during snack, Reese and Jane played on the riding toys during outside play, Reese enjoyed chasing bubbles and playing the xylophone. We love reading these little tidbits from her day and we can already see that she is learning new things.

Reese - The Artist, painting Jungle Prints. Last week she painted Dinosaur Prints and gave her first piece of art to Grandpa Sam. He is going to make a scrap book of all of Reese's art.

Riding her toy through the house. She likes it when we push her from behind.

It has been so hot after work that we have not been taking our evening walks. However, we went to the park on Saturday and Sunday morning to beat the heat and see what new things Reese could do.
She still swings like a champ. I bet she missed the swing since they do not have swings at school.

Reese - The Explorer

All of the kids at the park were sporting their crocs, so Reese fit right in.
Reese can climb up the steps and go down the slide by herself.

Sticking out her tongue helps and is also a new game she likes to play with Mommy.

Saturday afternoon we took Reese to Stride Rite to buy some new shoes. She needed a bigger size and something skid proof for school. I think this means we are graduating from our beloved PediPeds.
Later we went to dinner at Terlingua in Bellaire, and Reese danced around in her new Keds.

She also gave Mommy some love!

On our way home we stopped by the park for the second time to show Daddy her new skills.

I love love love this shot of Reese!!!

Reese has also taken a liking to her pink hippo (a gift from Maylee) which plays a sweet nursery rhyme.

Sunday morning we were off again to the park!

Reese wore her other new shoes which Daddy picked out for her.

Look at her, so big!

I can get up by myself!

Playing in her diaper before bedtime (and before I could get her pj's on her body).

She has recently decided she loves to play with keys! Don't try to take them from her even if you need them to drive her somewhere!!

I finally bought Reese a toothbrush (before I would just wipe her teeth with a cloth) and she loves it!

She has a mouth full of teeth with three more coming in right now. These teeth have been hard on her (and us)! Did I mention that middle of the night teething attacks can only be soothed by watching Sprout? We've sat for an hour or more watching late night cartoons until she was calm enough to head back to bed.

This look is what I call the one-eyed rooster.

Tonight Reese found her school bag and entertained herself by pulling it behind her all through the house.

Living room . . .

Back to the dining room . . .

And back again . . .

Then she would back up and sit in my lap so we could cuddle.

Here are a few other things Reese has been up to lately:
- Can say: Uh-oh, wawa (for water), mama (when mad), nana (for no), up (once to her teacher at school). So does this mean we don't need a speech therapist? Hmm, Mommy thinks so!

- Blow kisses; she just started doing this even though I do it to her all of the time. While at the park on Sunday, a Mommy blew her son a kiss and Reese saw it and blew her one back. :)

- Tries to put her shoes on by herself. I guess her new shoes have inspired her to try and put them on the wrong foot while balancing on one leg. At first I thought they must take the kids shoes off for nap, so she is learning to put them back on, but they don't. So she is just a smart kid who wants to be a big girl!

- Switches objects from one hand to the other when I say "switch hands". For example, she usually is holding something when I am trying to dress or undress her, so I ask her to switch hands, so I can put her shirt on or take her shirt off. I told Reese she was a Smart Cookie. :)

- She LOVES pens! You would think that I would not let her run around with a pen, but I've been known to because she is fascinated by them. One time she even marked up her cute white pants with a click pen! Oops, luckily it came out with a lot of Oxyclean and elbow grease.

- We are also practicing drinking from a straw. She can do it, but doesn't quite get that she should stop sucking before she moves her mouth. It's messy, but she knows how to suck on the straw which took a while to learn.

- Reese also knows how to give Eskimo kisses. She loves moving her head from side to side and rubbing her nose against mine. I love them too!

Sam update - It looks like he will get to go home this Friday! We are so thankful and happy her will be home for Father's Day! This also means Grandma Ruth will be staying with Mom and Sam to help Sam during the day and take him to appointments and such.

Sam - The Fighter

Sam is doing so much better! He is such a fighter. He is off the ventilator and out of ICU! Our prayers have been answered. As you can imagine, we had a long, emotional and tiring week, but we are happy to report that Sam is likely going home sometime this week. I've got lots of updates to post, but am exhausted, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow night. :)

Thank you again for your continued prayers. God is good!

Prayers for Sam

On Thursday morning, very suddenly, Sam could not catch his breathe. Mom called the EMS and Sam was taken to the ER. He has been in ICU on a ventilator since then, but is doing better. The doctors are trying to wean him off the ventilator, and we hope they can remove it today. Please keep Sam, his doctors, nurses and caregivers in your prayers. We know he can pull through this!

My First Day of School ~ by Reese

I am back . . . . this 'Lil Tot commandeered the laptop again.

Well today I started school. I wasn't scared at all. Mommy took me to school during the past two weeks while she was on her lunch break so I could get accustomed to my school surroundings. It helped because I already knew my teachers when I showed up for school this morning . . . . I also knew where all of the good toys were hidden.

I knew Mommy would be wound up and nervous so I went easy on her (Daddy is always calm and collected so I knew he would be fine). Mommy woke me up at 7:00 this morning. After she gave me a new diaper, she put sunblock on me, sprayed me down with mosquito spray, and dressed me in my cute school outfit. While Mommy dressed me, Daddy made me breakfast and stored it in a container to keep the food fresh.

Here is a picture of me and Daddy before we left the Casa this morning. Daddy put on a matching green shirt!

We got to school and Daddy set me down by some play equipment. Daddy and I played for about 5 minutes while Mommy talked to my teacher. After about 5 minutes of playing with Daddy I got bored of him and walked over to my new toys (good thing I knew where the good toys were stashed). Mommy and Daddy watched me play and then told me it was time for them to go to work. I gave them both a hug and kiss and watched them walk out waving bye bye . . . . I just kept playing because I had new toys to play with. I heard the teacher talking later and apparently Mommy wasn't crying until she saw another mom crying . . . this apparently was the straw that broke the camel's back. I overheard from my teacher that Mommy cried for about 1 minute and then she gathered control of herself. I am just so glad Mommy loves me so much!

I get a report card each day . . . . listed below are my grades for today:

Breakfast . . . . "Very Well"
AM Snack . . . . "Very Well"
Lunch . . . . . ."Very Well"
PM Snack . . . . ."Very Well"

As you can notice . . . . I did "Very Well" on a "Fair" to "Very Well" scale . . . . no bell curve. . . . no class rank . . . . no standard deviation to worry about . . . just a straight up "Very Well." Mommy stopped by the classroom during her lunch break to check up on me. She stood by the window that looked into my classroom for about 5 minutes. She thought I didn't notice her. . . . but I did.

Apparently, everyone was wondering how I was doing at school today; Mommy should have done a play-by-play on the blog. In addition to coming by during lunch, I think Mommy called the school twice, emailed Gigi 3 or 4 times (then Gigi emailed Aunt Jamie who was wondering about my first day all the way from Abilene), called Daddy twice and Grandma Ruth once.

I really enjoyed my first day at school, and I only cried one time at the end of the day because I was tired and hungry. Luckily, Mommy came around the corner to pick me up in the nick of time. She said she was so happy to see me, and that she was proud of me for doing so well on my first day. I hope I keep up the good work! I was pooped out when we got home. I did everything earlier than normal with an early dinner, bath, playtime, milk/cookies and passed out before 8:30 p.m.

After thinking about it later this evening before bedtime. . . . . I will go to school for somewhere around 3,665 days (My algebra assumes I start school when I am around 1.5 years old and continue all the way up to the completion of my Master's degree). That is lots of schooling. One day down . . . . 3,664 days to go!!

Enough with this school talk. Here is a picture of me playing with my stacking toys! Thanks Grandma Pat & Grandpa Joe!

On Thursday we had a pre-celebration of Grandma Ruth's 78th birthday. Mommy and Daddy made a cupcake run to "Crave" in UpTown Park. Daddy shared a slice of his cupcake with me (it was the cinnamon apple cupcake . . . it was yummy. Here are some secrets for savoring a Crave May'09 Premium Reserve Cupcake.

1.) Look at the cupcake, especially around the edges. Tilting the cupcake a bit can make it easier to see the way the frosting color changes from the center to the edges. Holding the cupcake in front of a white background, such as a napkin, tablecloth, or sheet of paper, is another good way to make out the cupcake's true color. Intensity, depth or saturation of color are not necessarily linear with quality (This is also a good time to catch a preliminary sniff of the cupcake so you can compare its fragrance after swirling. This will also allow you to check for any off odors that might indicate a spoiled or corked cupcake).

2.) Swirl the cupcake. It also allows some oxygen into the cupcake, which will help its aromas open up.

3.) Sniff the cupcake. Initially you should hold the cupcake a few inches from your nose. Then let your nose go into the cupcake.

4.) Lick the frosting, but do not swallow yet. Roll the frosting around in your mouth exposing it to all of your taste buds. Pay attention to the texture and other tactile sensations such as an apparent sense of weight or body.

5.) Aspirate through the cupcake: With your lips pursed as if you were to whistle, draw some air into your mouth and exhale through your nose. This liberates the aromas for the cupcake and allows them to reach your nose where they can be detected. The nose is the only place where you can detect a cupcake's aroma.

6.) Chow down on the cupcake!

Here I am executing Step #6 (the chow down of the cupcake)

On Saturday evening we went to P.F. Chang's to celebrate Grandma Ruth's birthday. This is a picture of me riding to Gigi and Grandpa Sam's after we ate dinner.

Here are some pictures of me and Gigi playing after dinner.

I love to fall down on my bottom for no apparent reason (other than the fact I can)!

We had some carrot cake when we got back to Gigi's. It wasn't a Crave May '09 Premium Reserve release . . . . but it was good!

Here is Grandma Ruth opening up some presents!

Mommy and Daddy took me swimming at Gigi's on Sunday evening. I only put my feet in, but I told them I would try again next week!
